Dr. Susanne Haberstroh

Project Lead

Susanne Haberstroh serves as chief officer for research-based learning in the university administration at the University of Oldenburg. The University of Oldenburg is an important center for the development of research-based education in Germany. Susanne Haberstroh was director of the third party project “Research-based Learning in Focus” at University of Oldenburg (2011-2021).

She is a founding member of the Global Alliance of Undergraduate Research and on the board of the World Congresses on Undergraduate Research (WorldCUR), which she chaired at the University of Oldenburg in 2019. Susanne Haberstroh also coordinates the implementation of the conferences on undergraduate research in Germany.

Professor Harald Mieg

Scientific project advisor

Harald Mieg is an honorary professor at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and affiliated to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich. Mieg is committed to implementing the ideal of “Bildung durch Wissenschaft” (research-and reflection-based education), once formulated by Wilhelm von Humboldt, in today’s university teaching and to help create the necessary conditions for this.

Mieg has been a university professor since 1999, being committed to student research from the very beginning. He has directed and carried out projects with and national studies on student research in Germany (BMBF, 15 universities), Austria (BMBFW, 4 universities) and Switzerland (today ETH-TDLAb). He was one of the initiators of the foundation of the German network for student research (dghdAG).

Mieg has an extensive publication list on student research, inquiry based learning, undergraduate research, and the German Multidisciplinary experience, most recently with the Cambridge Handbook of Undergraduate Research.

Dr Therese Montgomery

Project Lead

Dr Therese Montgomery, a Lecturer and researcher in Biochemistry at Atlantic Technological University, Ireland  is chair of the Irish Science Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Network. As one of the founding members of the (SURE) Network in 2016, Dr. Montgomery co-chaired the inaugural national SURE undergraduate research conference in 2018.

Since then, Dr. Montgomery has co-ordinated the roll out of the annual national SURE research conference through 17 parallel, virtual and now single host formats. SURE-J, Ireland's only expertly reviewed undergraduate research journal  is also co-ordinated through the SURE Network. The Irish SURE Network has received several awards, most notably the Best academic network and Best Career Impact Strategy award at the 2019 and 2023 Irish Education Awards respectively.

Dr. Brigid Hooban

Dr. Brigid Hooban is a lecturer in medical science at Atlantic Technological University, Ireland. In 2022, Brigid completed her PhD in Bacteriology at the University of Galway and has a number of publications in the field of antimicrobial resistance. Brigid is an active member of the Science Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) network in Ireland.

Femi Odebiyi

Project Lead

Femi Odebiyi is an Assistant Professor at LCC International University, Lithuania. He is active on the boards of CUR, the US Council on Undergraduate Research. He is very active in engaging students in Faculty-Student research activities and his most recent activity being the 2022 J.J. Kidd Fellowship award for the project Creative Interdisciplinary Conversation on Undergraduate Research (CICUR) and the Global Research Collaboration of faculty and students at his university and Friends University, USA. He commits time to reviewing abstract submissions for student conferences like National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), USA, and World Congress on Undergraduate Research (WCUR). Apart from teaching, Femi Odebiyi enjoys finding ways for students to experience authentic research and discovery methods.

Agnes Darabos, Ph. D

Project Lead

Agnes is a postdoctoral researcher in political science at the University of Luxembourg. Her work focuses on democratic governance and political culture in Luxembourg and across Europe. She is committed to high-quality, supportive, inclusive, and student-centred higher education, and actively promotes research-based teaching and learning both in her own courses and at the instituional level. Within the Posters in Brussels initiative, she is driven by the goals of building bridges between students and parliamentary institutions, and making student feel that their research is seen and valuable.

Brigitte Römmer-Nossek

Project Lead

Dr. Brigitte Römmer-Nossek is head of the Student Research and Peer Learning team at the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at the University of Vienna. As a cognitive scientist and university didactician, she is concerned with competence acquisition from the perspective of students, teachers and curriculum developers. She is particularly interested in research-based learning, the academic socialisation of students, the role and design of physical and digital spaces, and the potential of interdisciplinarity.

As a lecturer, she is currently involved in the master's programme MEi:CogSci as well as in the extension curriculum "Akademische Schreibkompetenz entwickeln, vermitteln und beforschen – Ausbildung von Schreibmentor*innen" ("Developing, teaching and researching academic writing competence - training writing mentors"); she was significantly involved in the conception and curriculum development of both projects.

Isabella Ollinger

Isabella Ollinger, BA, is an educational scientist specializing in media education and joined the CTL as part of the team Student Research and Peer Learning in 2023. From 2018-2023 she worked as a writing-mentor, writing-assistant and peer student-counselor. Her areas of focus at the CTL include the coordination of the writing mentoring program and the development and implementation of workshops in various formats. Since 2021 she is lecturer at the PH Wien and the University of Vienna in the fields of media education and academic writing.

Emma Barker

Project Lead

Emma Barker is the Journal and Conferences Manager in the Institute of Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) at the University of Warwick. She leads two of IATL’s flagship student research projects: Reinvention, the international undergraduate research journal, and ICUR, the International Conference of Undergraduate Research.

Alongside these keystone initiatives, Emma plays a central role in shaping and delivering IATL’s student research strategy and developing new partnerships in this area. She works closely with student research teams and contributes to sector-wide networks and working groups, supporting Warwick’s commitment to innovative, globally connected undergraduate research.  She was co-lead for the joint World Congress on Undergraduate Research and the British Conference of Undergraduate Research in 2023 and currently manages the delivery of the UK Posters in Parliament.

Professor Jane Byran

Project Lead

Jane Bryan is a Professor at Warwick Law School at the University of Warwick. Jane's work focuses on innovative teaching and supporting students to develop as independent researchers and thinkers.  Her achievements in this area led to her appointment as a prestigious National Teaching Fellow and a Principal Fellow of Advance HE (UK).

Jane was co-lead of the Warwick team which hosted the joint World Congress on Undergraduate Research and British Conference of Undergraduate Research in 2023 and took over leadership of the Posters in Parliament (UK) initiative in 2023, reviving and developing it after its lapse over COVID.

Caroline Gibson

Caroline Gibson is Deputy Director of the Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) at the University of Warwick. Her work focuses on educational innovation, research‑infused learning, and collaborative approaches that connect students, staff, and disciplines.

Caroline has created and supported major national and international initiatives in undergraduate research, designing Warwick’s International Conference of Undergraduate Research (ICUR) and Reinvention journal, and hosting the British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR) in 2012 and 2023, and the World Congress on Undergraduate Research (WorldCUR) in 2023. She is part of the team at the University of Warwick who coordinates the UK's Posters in Parliament event and has been happy to share that experience with the Posters in Brussels project. She is particularly interested in experimental, practice‑led projects that create inclusive and meaningful learning experiences.

Fiona O'Brien

Project Manager

Fiona O’Brien is a Student Research Support Officer based in the Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) at the University of Warwick. Fiona programme manages a host of student research dissemination projects, supporting students not only at Warwick but from other national and international institutions, to effectively communicate their research.

Fiona is the managing editor for the long-established Reinvention an International Journal of Undergraduate Research, a journal known for its high-quality peer reviewed student research articles. Other projects include supporting the delivery of the International Conference of Undergraduate Research (ICUR) programme and engaging students to attend the British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR). Since 2025 Fiona has managed Posters in Parliament on behalf of BCUR and works develop and deliver an event which is well attended by students, academics, MPs and policy makers in UK Parliament.
